About This Quote

A true story. A man was caught stealing from his neighbor's home. He was arrested and sent to jail. When he came back from prison he went to the poor neighbor's house and found a note on his doorstep.

It said: " Please, if you want to know what the camel stole from your kitchen yesterday, then you shouldn't slit open its stomach. You should stare into its arsehole." The man went home and did as he was told. Inside his own belly he saw a flash of light and then a camel appeared before him.

It said: "Open that door and walk through it." The man opened the door and walked into a desert. In this desert there were no houses, no people, no nothing. It was just sand and stones and dry grasses.

He walked for a long time until he heard a voice calling out from somewhere in the distance. He looked around but couldn't see anything or anyone except for a small bird sitting on a rock nearby. The bird said: "Over there." The man walked towards the voice until he saw a large windmill with water flowing just outside of it's walls by one of the towers.

There were people around it, all smiling and waving at him as he approached them. When he reached them, they all hugged him and asked him how long it had been since his release from prison. They pointed to the water tower and asked if he could fix it so that they could have fresh water regularly again instead of having to go out to their wells every few days for water.

The man fixed the water tower for them and they thanked him greatly by giving him all of their food supplies, grain, even some money that they had kept for emergencies like this one; apparently they never had to use any of it before because they had always been able to get fresh water regularly (and access to food). The man thanked them for their kindness and watched them leave with joy in their hearts as if someone had given them an easy way out of their problems; as if there was still hope left in this world after all these years of misery and hardship; as if such an easy solution could solve all their problems (even though there were still plenty left). Then he returned home feeling optimistic about humanity again after so many years of feeling hopeless about humanity...until he checked himself in the mirror...or rather where his arsehole should have been...and found his reflection staring right back at him!
